چکیده

We discuss the possible existence of an observational window, in the TeVPeV energy range, for the detection of prompt neutrinos from the decay of charmed particles produced in cosmic ray interactions with the atmosphere. We calculate the event rates for muon and tau neutrinos of heavy quark, mostly charm, origin. We argue that their prompt fluxes are observable in a kilometer-scale neutrino telescope, even though the calculations are subjected to large uncertainties, which we quantify. We raise the possibility that a small component of prompt neutrinos may already be present in the observed samples of current experiments. We also discuss the interplay of the predicted fluxes with those produced by the flavor oscillation of conventional atmospheric neutrinos, and by anticipated cosmic sources. Typeset using REVTEX

Muons in IceCube

The IceCube detector allows for the first time a measurement of atmospheric muon and neutrino energy spectra from tens of GeV up to the PeV range. The lepton flux in the highest energy region depends on both the primary cosmic ray composition around the “knee” and the contribution from prompt decays of mostly charmed hadrons produced in air showers. It is demonstrated here that a direct measure...

Astrophysical tau neutrino detection in kilometer-scale Cherenkov detectors via muonic tau decay

Kilometer-scale deep under-ice or -water Cherenkov neutrino detectors may detect muon and electron neutrinos from astrophysical sources at energies of a TeV and above. Tau neutrinos are also expected from these sources due to neutrino flavor oscillations in vacuum, and tau neutrinos are free of atmospheric background at a much lower energy than muon and electron neutrinos. Identification of tau...

PeV neutrinos observed by IceCube from cores of active galactic nuclei

Recently, the IceCube Collaboration has reported the first observation of cosmic 2 PeV energy neutrinos giving a signal 3 above the atmospheric background [1]. More recently, 18 events 4 above the expected atmospheric background were reported with energies above 100 TeV. These neutrinos are likely to be of cosmic origin; their angular distribution is consistent with isotropy. The average spectr...

10 20 eV Cosmic - Ray and Particle Physics with Kilometer - Scale

We show that a kilometer-scale neutrino observatory, though optimized for TeV to PeV energy, is sensitive to the neutrinos associated with super-EeV sources. These include super-heavy relics, neutrinos associated with the Greisen cutoff, and topological defects which are remnant cosmic structures associated with phase transitions in grand unified gauge theories. It is a misconception that new i...

High Energy Neutrino Astronomy: The Experimental Road

The next ten years promise to be a particularly exciting decade for high energy neutrino astrophysics. The frontier of TeV and PeV energies is presently being tackled by large, expandable arrays constructed in open water or ice. Detectors tailored to record acoustic, radio, fluorescence or air shower signatures from neutrino interactions at PeV – EeV energy are being designed in parallel. Durin...
